Role Playing Games

Computer role-playing games (CRPGs), often shortened to simply Role-playing games (RPGs), are a classification of video game. CRPG's, in general, are derivative of paper-and-pencil based role-playing games (RPGs) such as Dungeons & Dragons. For example, the vast majority of video-game RPGs assign various attributes to the characters, such as hit points (HP), magic points (MP), and levels. These games also tend to borrow the narrative structure of many paper-and-pencil RPGs; usually a group of heroes (a party) is sent on some sort of quest. Along the way, the adventurers face an endless barrage of enemies and monsters (often inspired by real-world mythology).

Bard's Tale Series

The Bard's Tale takes place in the city of Skara Brae, which has been taken over by the evil wizard Mangar, who has brought an eternal winter over the city. Monsters roam the streets and it is dangerous to stay out in the streets at night. Your mission is to lead your party of adventurers through the streets, sewers, dungeons, and towers of Skara Brae to search for a way to defeat Mangar. Bard's Tale continued Wizardry's 3-D perspective while adding a number of innovations such as more characters classes, indoor and outdoor adventuring, and color graphics, among other things.

Ultima Underworld

Ultima Underworld was one of the first ever 3D first perspective games to be made, using a similar engine to Wolfenstein 3D or Doom except it was developed by and was made by Warren Spector of Looking Glass Technologies; Looking Glass was known as Blue Sky Productions then. It was based on the original Ultima series, and was set in between Ultima VI - VII in the Ultima universe.

I think that Ultima Underworld is a fanstastic game, definitly one of the best ever first person perspective games with an RPG style to it. It looks and feels a lot like "The Elder Scrolls - The Arena" too, but with the exception that you cannot go into the outside world, since the entire game is set in a huge dungeon. If you have tried this one and liked it then also try Ultima Underworld II, it has much enhancements done to the engine and just about everything basically.
