Strategy, War Games and Puzzles
CaptiveYou awake in prison, without the memory of who you are, where you are and why you are imprisoned. In the corner of your cell you find a briefcase computer, which gives you the control over a unit of four droids. Now you must use these droids to find yourself, and free yourself. With the help of the droids you explore tech-dungeons (its a SF-setting, but the feeling is like fantasy rpgs with robots and droids) and seek information, which lead to the next planet(s) on a path, which end marks your cell. The Movement and Fighting is similar to games like Eye of the Beholder, but you can buy weapons and droid-parts in shops. The droids haven't levels like in normal rpgs, you must buy upgrades for the different parts of the droids, which make them stronger and faster. |

Centurion - Emperor of RomeAn entertaining game with bits of adventure elements (for example, at some point you'll get to meet Cleopatra and try to-- erm-- win her favor), this game is reminiscent of the old Cinemaware classic Defender of the Crown for its strong emphasis on fun over historical realism. (Not surprisingly, since it's designed by the same designer, ex-Cinemaware Kellyn Beck). As official of the Roman Empire, you must manage armies, calm rebellious citizens, and conquer neighboring countries. Rome wasn't built in a day, but win enough chariot races, and you might be able to do it in a matter of weeks |

Defender of the Crown (EGA)Defender of the Crown puts you in the role of one of four Saxon knights in medieval England, in a time where the land is in turmoil as the King is dead and his crown was stolen. The Saxons and the Normans blame each other and fight for control of England. The game has several different styles: You may either engage in a jousting contest where you have to knock your opponent off his horse using a lance, you can go raid a castle for loot or you can attack another territory/castle. The game was originally created on the Amiga platform in 1986 by Cinemaware with graphics by James D. Sachs and music by Jim Cuomo, then ported to the PC whilst keeping its original gameplay. |

Dune & Dune IIThis is the first RTS (Real Time Strategy) game that was released,
and continues to be one of the best. The control of the game could
be improved perhaps with some shortcuts to do the movements, attacks,
etc.. but apart from that the game has great music, graphics,
and overall gameplay. |

Jagged Alliance 1 & 2Wicked game. Your team is creepy-crawling through the terrain and you know the enemy is around. The question is, "do they know you're there?" You direct one of your team to cover a position on the other side of a small stream. As he wades across the stream, the splash of water alerts the enemy. Damn! It's a mad scramble for cover as gunfire erupts. Now you wish you would have assigned a team member to bring the grenades you found earlier to clear out this small pocket of enemies. Game of the year '95! Get this! |

LemmingsThe first amongst a barrage of similarly themed titles, (including a 3D variant) Lemmings introduced little dumb creatures which you have the big task to bring to safety. Each level has a certain % rate that needs to be saved in order to pass the level. The degree of difficulty increases as you go higher through the levels. Lemmings have different skills, some are equipped with include things such as shovels, pickaxes, self destructing lemmings, umbrellas, bridge builders etc. By clicking on the 2 paws, it will pause the game in case you need some time to think up a strategy of how to pass, or simply need a break. Each level also has a time level, but in the earlier stages is more than easy enough to beat. Help the little creatures reach their target and save as many as you can! |

Populous 1 & 2That Populous II isn't just a prettier Populous is obvious from the start: different points can be allocated to different elements to make your character more or less powerful in that area. For example, if you want your god to be a fire god (handy when fighting Neptune), you can give him/her more points in "fire" element. You will then get powerful fire effects (e.g. meteor shower and volcano) to wreck havoc on your opponents' followers much quicker than effects in other elements. As in the first game, you must use supernatural powers to help your followers defeat the enemies. Your powers, as in Populous are what makes the game a lot of fun: in addition to old favorites such as tidal waves and volcano, there are many more creative ones such as baptismal fonts which turn enemy people into your followers (on the downside, these converts can change back into the enemies when they fall into it the second time!) The bigger the effect, the more mana you must have. Mana comes from your followers: the more followers you have, the more mana they give you. |

X-Com - Ufo Enemy UnknownXCOM is essentially two separate games with interlinkage. On
the strategic side, called GeoScape, you get a rotating view of
the globe, where you see all visible UFOs (those that are within
your detection range) as well as major cities and your base(s).
You order movements from here, such as sending out fighters to
intercept UFOs, transports with soldiers to assault/recover UFOs,
and perhaps assault alien bases (if you find any). You also control
your research, as you must find better weapons (the Terran weapons
are just no match against the alien weapons) quickly, not to mention
all the other cool tech you can recover from the aliens. You also
need to control your budget, as you can't afford to overextend
your reach. |

WarcraftWarcraft 1 is one of the classic RTS (Real Time Strategy) games. Warcraft 1 is about two warring sides, the Humans and the Orcs. Like many of the older RTS games the only real difference between the units is the graphics and the sounds, your magic units may have some different spells but the differences end there. Warcraft 1 is still a decent game though, it has varied missions from the build a base and destroy the enemy, to the tough missions where you take a small troop of units to rescue someone. If you have recently played a RTS game you will catch onto Warcraft 1 quickly, with the basic collecting of resources, creating and updating units and buildings. |
