Simulations (including sports games)
4D Sports BoxingI used to play this game against my cousins and it was and still is great. There are heaps of options to play around with and the graphics are pretty good with polygons instead of sprites. Its pretty easy to get into and the controls are simple with the arrow buttons for movement and when pressed with the enter key your character punches. You can play in a single game, championship or against a mate which I believe is the best. |

688 Attack Sub688 Attack Sub is a classic modern submarine simulation which puts you in command of either the American Los Angeles or the Soviet Alfa class nuclear-powered submarines. Most of the systems you would expect such as sonar and periscope are featured and nicely presented in VGA. The game offers ten missions for both the Soviet and American side in a Cold War scenario, that grows progressively hotter. Nice to see that the two sides' submarines have their own graphic sets in the game, even with some pseudo-cyrillic labels on the Russian side. Overall, 688 Attack Sub is an interesting early sub-sim and certainly a classic in the genre-- arguably the best sub-sim for PC until Dynamix' Aces of The Deep years later. Especially the modem-play option was outstanding for its time. |

M4 Abrams Battle TankOne of the first 3D tank simulator also remains to this day one of the finest. Designer Damon Slye created a game that offers both realism and great gameplay without sacrificing the fun factor. Control modern U.S. tank Abrams in various missions ranging from bombardment to escort. A great game that stands the test of time, and bodes well for Slye's later Aces series. |

Battle Hawks 1942Fly as an American or Japanese pilot in one of 4 operations in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. This simulation can also qualify as educational software because the manual features tons of historical information. Tewlve aircraft (including variants) and about 20 types of ships are represented. |

BudokanBudokan is a game of martial arts and focuses on four types of combat, karate, nanchakas, kendo and boe fighting. You train by yourself and with your sensei for preparation to the tournament. In the tournament there are many opponents and some use different weapons to what you can choose from. Skill is required and you can only use each style four times, so you have to figure out which style is good against another style. Two players can play against one another, but for sparring only. Pretty good game for its time and will keep you going for a while. |

Elite, Elite II and Frontier Elite 1 & 2Elite Plus is an excellent VGA update of the classic Elite, and is now commonly regarded as the best version of Elite. It provides excellent sounds, smooth animation, intensive combat, and all the special missions. Inputs for keyboard, joystick, or mouse are all supported, and can be customized by the player. Without a doubt this is my most favorite game in this series. |

F-15 Strike Eagle IIFollow-up to Sid Meier's legendary early flight sim F-15 Strike Eagle from 1985. For the sequel, he teamed up with Andy Hollis to create yet again an outstanding flight simulation that perfectly balances arcade and simulation elements. It could hardly be described as a hardcore simulation, but it's a fun action game in a solid flight sim environment. F-15 II offers four difficulty levels to choose from, with missions set in four theatres of war: Libya, Persian Gulf, Vietnam and Middle East (without the scenario disk). Most missions are laid-out in the same way: there's a primary target and a secondary target. Your mission is to destroy them both and return home in one piece to your air base or carrier. Of course, destroying any other enemy targets during your flight doesn't hurt and will earn you a higher mission score which, like in Gunship 2000, translates into promotions and medals. For a simulation, the game is very simple. There are only three
types of weapons you can use, two for air-to-air combat and one
for air-to-ground attacks. Killing targets is very often just
fire-and-forget, the flight model is simple and straight-forward.
Graphics are very nice for its time and there's even some in-game
speech through the PC speaker or adlib sound-card. Overall, a
solid arcade-oriented sim with a steep learning-curve, not very
realistic but fun. A classic. |

F-19 Stealth FighterMany would say that anything prior to the classic Falcon 3.0
is closer to a jazzed-up arcade experience than a true simulation.
How ironic it is, then, that MicroProse's later F-117A flight
sim hasn't held up nearly as well as F-19 Stealth Fighter, which
was published before the government's announcement of the real-life
F-117 stealth fighter. |

Face-Off HockeyFace-Off is a game made by the creators of the popular 'Hardball'
series. It is a thrilling game of ice-hockey where you buy a team
and manage the players and also play in the actual game. You can
trade players, sell players, and retire them. Two players can
play against one another. This game also has a bit of action as
the players fight in order to resolve fouls. The good thing about
being good at the fighting in this game, is if you win you don't
get sent off, which seems a little bit odd, but hey who are we
to complain!? |

Indy 500Race a 25-mile sprint or the full 500 in this 3-D simulation of the Indianapolis 500. Many different options are available for customization, from the engine manufacturer, to tire pressure, to foil angle -- even to the amount of gas in the tank. Instant replays are available and can be viewed from multiple angles. |

Ironman Super Off-RoadIronman Super Off-Road Racing is an aerial view 3 player racing game. I remember we used to spend hours competing and playing this game, but I guess with all the great games out there now it wouldn't be as addictive as it used to be. The music rocks. Oh yes, it still makes me laugh. As you complete each race you get money to spend on doing up your racer, and new tracks are introduced through the game, and then they're reversed and mirrored. If you played it before then you'll enjoy it again. If you haven't, well, download it off an abondonware site, get a friend to compete, and tell me what you think. |

Lakers vs CelticsLakers ve Celtics is a cleverly designed, fun to play basketball game featuring real NBA teams. There are ten '88-'89 NBA teams, including the East and West All-Stars. You can play the biggest names of the NBA history including Kareem, Bird, Jordan and Ewing, and use all the signature moves. A tournament mode is available. |

LHX Attack ChopperI recall playing this game jointly with a good old friend of mine for hours at a time. We actually controlled different sets of controls, one player acting as the pilot and the other managing the radar, targeting system and deploying the different weaponry. While this game's flight mode is hardly realistic, the game has one thing for it - its sheer fun.You can fly in a LHX (future helicopter) an Apache, a Blackhawk and an Osprey. All fly differently, being the LHX a nifty little bugger, very fast and agile, as well as armed to the back teeth, the Apache being slower and thougher, but even better armed (even though it sports an analog cockpit), the Blackhawk being a workhorse, but an armed one, as well as tough to crack as a nut, and really necessary for the rescue and supply missions, and the Osprey, an aircraft-helicopter hybrid (now in service) that takes off like a chopper and then flies like an aircraft. The enemy aren't too dumb. Missiles and AAA will engage you ASAP, and so will tanks. While enemy helicopters won't pose much of a danger (unless they are Havocs or Hokums), enemy jets will. |

3D PoolA great "3D" Pool Game. Fast and Simple. You can play against the computers with different skills (including tournaments), another player or just play in the Trick Shots. You can use the 3D resource or just the Bird Eye. Two kind of games : 8 and 9 ball. |

Red BaronThe campaign system is flawlessly executed and follows you through the war, offering promotions, movement to "expert" squadrons, even personal challenges from pilots on the other side. I had two of these, in one a French pilot challenged me and I won after having to hide out in some clouds for a while. In another I showed up and he brought his entire squad with him - but I was flying a Triplane so they didn't last long. An example of the depth is the way your plane is handled. Once you've done well enough you are allowed to start requesting the newest models from the factories, and even get to paint them the way you like in an editor. I haven't seen that anywhere else. As to the rest it's all "good enough", apart from a very sparse landscape and terrain. |

Sensible SoccerThe first football/soccer game to challenge the supremacy of the Kick Off series. The graphical view is from a distance overhead, making the players small on screen but making around half the pitch visible. The basic control system involves loose control, making running with the ball ('dribbling' in football parlance) a skill to master, and putting the emphasis on one-touch passing, which can be easily performed by tapping the fire button. The game features customisable league and cup competitions as well as pre-set ones including the 1992 European Championships. There are 168 teams in total - 40 European nations, the 64 top club sides, and 64 custom teams with names ranging from self-indulgent to comical, and their details are fully editable. |

Speedball 1 & 2The Bitmap Brothers affirmed their status as leading action game developer with Speedball 1 and 2, two highly enjoyable futuristic ball games that combine elements of handball and rugby. Speedball is the sport of the future. Maneuver your man around, and try to get the ball into the opponent's net. Thrown in with the friendly game, is violence. How you score the goal doesn't really matter, its a free-for-all sport. Take out your opponent as you play, and you'll be guaranteed to take the upper hand - in this game, violence is everything. Speedball 2 (Mirrorsoft,1991) greatly expands on the concept with bigger pitches, more complex league play, and more. You are scored for injuring your opponents as well as goals, so... let the carnage begin ;) |

Street Rod 1 & 2Year is 1963 and you're one of the hotshots aspiring to be king of the county. You're given a small sum of money to buy your first car. Tune it for maximum performance and off you go. In the diner where other hotshots are waiting to take your prized possession, you race for money and pink slips and if you win, you get to take home their cars! The game's interface is relatively easy and fun to use. You have your own garage as the interface itself. Options are in the form of the garage's elements such as the clock for the game's main menu and the newspaper as your source for buying cars and parts. Add to that a third person with an attitude that talks to you as you play It's really a neat idea by which up to now, no other racing games have that style. You feel that you're living a virtual world as opposed to just going from menu to menu. Another cool part is the ability for you to sell your car and haggle. |

|||
Team SuzukiAll objects in the game including bikes and drivers are polygons except your dashboard, which is bitmapped. They are smooth and fast, however look a bit too simplistic and abstract for my taste (even for 1991). The game features many tracks to race on, in whole seasons, single or training sessions and features 125cc, 250cc and 500cc class bikes. Your bike is controlled with either the mouse, keyboard or joystick. Especially the mouse controls have a good feel, but the game is far from easy and takes a while to master. |

WolfpackWolfpack offers you the command of German U-boats, US destroyers, freighters and tankers. Good graphics for its time can't hide many glaring omissions that are prerequisite for great sub sims, such as career mode. Wolfpack does feature an intuitive mouse-driven interface, a decent mission builder, and twelve built-in scenarios, all with interesting objectives. After a few minutes, even casual naval commanders will notice that the game's realism and options are sorely lacking-- especially when compared to similar games like MicroProse's classic Silent Service II or Das Boot. |
